Copperbrush

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This average-sized shrub grows up to 2 feet (61.0 cm) tall and lives for around 32 years. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has many wide, wonky stems covered in delicate, knobbly, copper-coloured bark, and the wood inside is pale yellow.

The branches are very short and thin that and are covered with large amounts of miniature, 2 pointed, leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are green with aquamarine tips, flimsy and fuzzy.

It produces several medium-sized, amber flowers with pleated petals with a tube-like floral cup. They fall easily and have a delicate scent that smells like blood. In midwinter it forms medium-sizedolive, shelled seeds.


The sap is edible and slightly sweet.
It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
It is suitable for making paper
It blooms only at night.
