Copperfern

This short tree grows up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall and lives for centuries, with the oldest known specimen being around 517 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, twisting trunk covered in very thick, rough, burgundy and brown bark, and inside, the hard wood is copper-coloured.

The small bunches of branches trail down to the ground and are covered with large amounts of smooth, giant, triangular leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are found in olive and indigo varieties.

In late summer it forms small, blood red, winged seeds that float and land far away.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between filled with undergrowth.
