Bloodvine

Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short caudiciform grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall. The very thick stem is green, and is covered in copious amounts of rigid blood red spines. The very thick, grey trunk can grow to as much as 7 feet (2.1 meters) in diameter. Its green branches are very short and slender.

The serrated-edged, thick leaves are sky blue at the bottom and blood red with dark grey edges at the top. They are resilient, but do not detach easily.

It is fast growing, taking 9 months to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, a handful of flowers, with solid blood red petals and a black central disk, grow at the top, reappearing after 9 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet with 14 raised, narrow petals. It has a delicate scent that smells like sugar.

The caudiciform's skin is thin, the pink flesh is leathery, and the indigo sap is thin.

It is suitable for making paper
The leaves are high in natural sugars.
It can survive a very long time without water.
