Mahogany
Tree type: Coniferous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This short tree grows up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall and lives for over 1,000 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 1238 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.
It has a knobbly, angular trunk covered in paper-thin, cracked, mahogany-coloured bark, and inside, the light wood is black with white speckles.
The tangled mess of branches are long, thin and wispy, with hundreds of twigs covered with handfuls of large, emerald needles. The needles themselves are tough.
In late summer it produces large, lime, winged seeds that spin and fall nearby.
The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.
Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with clear space between them.
