This red moss is commonly found blanketing tiny areas In damp forests.
It is average-sized, growing up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. It forms in sparse patches and they are slow to spread and grow, and is slightly durable; it is very difficult to kill.
When mature, emerald crescent-shaped capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early summer to release millions of spores; it can cause allergic reactions.

The grains are bitter, but very healthy and extremely savoury.
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
