Bloodfruit Tree

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 12 feet (3.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 33 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a very thick, straight trunk covered in thick, rough, mahogany-coloured bark, and inside, the very hard wood is white with black speckles.

The branches are very long and thick and are covered with large amounts of miniature, perforated leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are red and blood red.

In early spring, it produces many small, red blossoms with long, narrow petals. They detach easily and have an overpowering scent that smells like skunk spray.

In early summer it produces tiny, broad, flat fruit. The leathery blood red skin is delicate and sweet and sour, and the very soft white flesh is sour and powdery. The green seeds are tiny and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with clear space between them.
