This burgundy moss is commonly found blanketing giant areas In damp forests, In rainy mountain ranges, and In heathlands.
It is modest-sized, growing up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps and they spread and grow quickly, and is extremely flimsy; it burns easily in strong sunlight.
When mature, emerald crescent-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early autumn to release millions of spores.

It is overwhelmingly resistant to fire damage.
It only grows on the most fertile lands.
It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
