It takes 6 months for the gray stems to mature, by which point they have tangled themselves into thick mats with a diameter of 4 inches (10 cm) and are rough and woody.
The thick, covered in fine hairs leaves reach up to 1.2 feet (36 cm) in length. They are found in blue, peach and cyan varieties, and have wavy edges.
