This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 61 years. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has numerous stocky, straight stems covered in thick, silky, black bark, and the wood inside is yellow-brown.

The branches trail down to the ground with dozens of twigs that and are covered with very large amounts of miniature, very thick, leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are solid orange or red, with pink lines, delicate and covered in fine hairs.

In mid-summer it produces large amounts of medium-sized, orange blossoms with circular petals. They are sturdy and have a delicate scent that smells like old books.

In early autumn tiny sickle-shaped fruits ripen. The smooth orange skin is delicate and inedible, and the crunchy hazel flesh is spicy and very juicy. The silver seed is large and sits at the end of the fruit.
