Blueberry Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 14 feet (4.3 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 52 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a branched, slanted trunk covered in hard, knobbly, gray bark, and inside, the soft wood is burgundy.

The numerous branches are long and slender and are covered with thick bunches of miniature, spiral leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are generally blue.

In early spring, it produces thousands of medium-sized, magenta blossoms with asymmetrical petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They fall easily and have a weak scent that smells like pine needles.

In late summer it produces , asymmetrical fruit. The smooth turquoise skin is thin and inedible, and the soft pink flesh is spicy and syrupy. The slate seed is very large and sits at the end of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
