Bluefruit Tree

This small fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 50 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a long and flexible, straight trunk covered in hard, ridged, dark gray bark, and inside, the flexible wood is dark brown.

The small handful of branches are short stubs and are covered with large amounts of huge, slender, pointed leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either turquoise or sky blue, with bronze patches.

In early spring, it produces hundreds of giant, dark grey blossoms with slender, pointed petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are hardy and have a delicate scent that smells like an ocean breeze.

In mid-summer it produces small, circular fruit. The rubbery gold skin is stretchy and edible when roasted; it is spicy and savoury, and the very soft magenta flesh is spicy and oily. The bright orange seed is large and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
