Blackfruit Tree

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 45 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a slender, twisting trunk covered in paper-thin, smooth, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the soft wood is gray.

The branches are long, thin and wispy and are covered with very large amounts of small, thin leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are solid vibrant yellow or black, with pink patches.

In early spring, it produces a thick sheet of giant, blue blossoms with sickle shaped petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are sturdy and have a strong scent that smells like citrus.

In mid-summer it produces , triangular fruit. The rubbery orange skin is thin and sweet, and the soft light blue flesh is sour and savoury and very juicy. The yellow seeds are tiny and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
