This burgundy moss is commonly found growing in giant clumps On rotten logs.
It is modest-sized, growing up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. It forms in thin clumps, and is very frail.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early winter to release dozens of spores.

It is suitable for making paper
It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
The petals are high in natural sugars
