Blackfruit Tree

This short fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 43 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a wide, straight trunk covered in thick, waxy, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the flexible wood is black.

The branches are long and thick and are covered with small bunches of giant, perforated leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of green that gradient shifts to purple at the top.

In early spring, it produces many giant, lilac blossoms with 8 flame-shaped shaped petals. They are sturdy and have an intense scent that smells like warm cookies.

In late autumn it produces small, slender, 2 pointed fruit. The sticky slate skin is peel-able and sour and savoury, and the slightly crunchy grey flesh is extremely bitter and sticky. The light green seeds are tiny and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots grow as a near perfect mirror of the tree above, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with grassy ground between them.
