Red Velvet

Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This giant caudiciform grows up to 130 feet (39.6 meters) tall. The very narrow, elongated stem is red, and is covered in thousands of rigid hazel spines. It has a wonky, thick, green trunk atop a narrow platform of cracked, exposed roots. The branches are narrow and gray and are short and slender.

The rounded-edged, long, narrow leaves are found in purple, azure and grey varieties. They are durable, and do not detach easily.

It is very fast growing, taking 5 months to reach maturity. Once mature, a single flower with petals that are either cream or subtle purple, with a yellow center grows at the top, reappearing every year. The flower head is shaped like a cup with 19 widely spaced, narrow petals. It has a mildly strong scent that smells like pineapple.

The caudiciform's skin is delicate, the light brown flesh is rough, and the turquoise sap is thin and can kill if consumed.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
It can survive a long time without water.
