Bronzeberry

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 13 feet (4.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 25 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a branched, wavy trunk covered in fine, cracked, pine-coloured bark, and inside, the very hard wood is brown.

The branches are long and thin and are covered with sparse amounts of large, circular leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are bronze on the edges and purple at the center.

In early spring, it produces lots of small, copper blossoms with pleated petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have an overpowering scent that smells like fresh linen.

In early summer it produces very large, prism-shaped fruit. The rubbery purple skin is stretchy and edible when cooked; it is sweet, and the crunchy dark brown flesh is sweet and spicy and powdery. The blood red seeds are tiny and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
