This green moss is commonly found blanketing large areas In heathlands.
It is large, growing up to 9 inches (23 cm) tall. It forms in extensive patches, and is extremely resilient.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late autumn to release dozens of spores; it does not cause many allergic reactions.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
