This burgundy moss is commonly found growing in giant clumps On trees, and On rotten logs.
It is giant, growing up to 1.2 feet (36 cm) tall. It forms in thin clumps and they are slow to spread and grow, and is extremely light.
When mature, emerald spiral capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late summer to release hundred of spores.

It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
It is suitable for making strong rope
