Copperberry

This huge fruit tree grows up to 58 feet (17.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 61 years old. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a stocky, wonky trunk covered in rough, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the very light wood is white.

The small bunches of branches are short, thin and wispy and are covered with very large amounts of small, long, tapering leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are blue and copper.

In early spring, it produces many small, blood red blossoms with perforated petals. They fall easily and have a weak scent that smells like a man.

In mid-summer it produces large, fan-like fruit. The smooth washed-out yellow skin is peel-able and inedible, and the very soft hazel flesh is bitter and savoury and powdery. The beige seed is tiny and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with clear space between them.
