Copperberry

This small fruit tree grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 20 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a very thick, twisting trunk covered in knobbly, white with black speckled bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is silver.

The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with large amounts of huge, fan-like leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are cream on the edges and copper at the center.

In early spring, it produces a thick sheet of medium-sized, amber blossoms with sickle shaped petals. They fall easily and have an intense scent that smells like burning wood.

In late summer it produces very large, circular fruit. The leathery hazel skin is thick and inedible, and the crunchy deep green flesh is sweet and dry. The bright yellow seed is very large and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between filled with undergrowth.
