Red Spike
Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This short caudiciform grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall. The very thick stem is brilliant red, and is covered in sharp spines. It has a angular, thin, lime trunk atop a narrow stilted platform of ridged, exposed roots. The branches are slender and copper and orange-yellow and are long, thin and wispy.
The smooth-edged, pleated leaves are either orange, or indigo with magenta edges. They are sturdy, and take little effort to detach.
It is steady-growing, taking 2 years to reach maturity. Once mature, a handful of flowers, with lime petals and a violet central disk, grow at the top, reappearing every year. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of 35 petals. It has a strong scent that smells like citrus.
The caudiciform's skin is very thick, the olive flesh is rubbery, and the yellow sap is thin.
