It has numerous stocky, straight stems covered in thin, wrinkled, yellow bark, and the wood inside is copper-coloured.
The branches are tall, rigid and upright with thousands of twigs that and are covered with large amounts of small, asymmetrical, leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are found in aquamarine and violet varieties, delicate and waxy.
In late spring it produces thick bunches of large, orange blossoms with pleated petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a scent that varies in strength that smells like vomit.
In late winter needle-like fruits ripen. The sticky red skin is thin and inedible, and the soft ashy green flesh is sour and very juicy. The blood red seed is very large and sits at the end of the fruit.
