Bluebell

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 2 feet (61.0 cm) tall and lives for around 85 years. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has many narrow, wavy stems covered in hard, waxy, brown bark, and the wood inside is yellow-brown.

The branches trail down to the ground that and are covered with handfuls of tiny, stiff, pointed, leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are found in ashy green and blue varieties, rigid and sticky.

In late summer it produces thousands of small, intense yellow blossoms with teardrop-shaped shaped petals. They are very delicate and have a delicate scent that smells like musk.

In late winter small wide fruits ripen. The crispy lilac skin is thin and inedible, and the slightly crunchy slate flesh is sweet and juicy. The pale red seeds are tiny and are bunched at the bottom of the fruit.

It is often home to a particular bird species.
