Bluebell Bush

This large shrub grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and lives for around 50 years. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has numerous branched, slanted stems covered in knobbly, dark brown bark, and the wood inside is white with black speckles.

The branches trail down to the ground with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with small amounts of large, V-shaped, leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are solid bronze with cream patches, delicate and smooth.

In late summer it produces a thick sheet of small, blue blossoms with long, narrow petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have an overpowering scent that smells like warm milk.

In late winter small oval fruits ripen. The hairy lime skin is tough and inedible, and the very soft sky blue flesh is sweet and spicy and very dry. The orange seed is tiny and sits at the top of the fruit.
