Copperberry

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 10 feet (3.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 29 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a branched, straight trunk covered in fine, waxy, yellow-brown bark, and inside, the dense wood is mahogany-coloured.

The sparse amount of branches trail down across the ground and are covered with handfuls of tiny, asymmetrical leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are solid copper or brown, with magenta patches.

In early spring, it produces balls of large, pale red blossoms with broad, flat petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a faint scent that smells like fermented fruit.

In early autumn it produces tiny, perforated fruit. The clammy amber skin is thin and inedible, and the slightly crunchy dark grey flesh is sweet and syrupy. The light brown seed is tiny and sits at the end of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.
