Bloodvine

Shrub type: Coniferous (Stores water in its leaves)

This small shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 32 years. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has many sturdy, wavy stems covered in waxy, burgundy bark, and the wood inside is pale brown-grey.

The branches trail down towards the ground that and are covered with large amounts of huge, slender, pointed, leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are generally hazel, tough and sticky.

In mid-spring it produces copious amounts of large, blood red blossoms with stiff, pointed petals. They are very delicate and have a delicate scent that smells like honeysuckle.

In late autumn perforated fruits ripen. The sticky bronze skin is delicate and spicy and savoury, and the crunchy crimson flesh is slightly salty and powdery. The bronze seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
