Shrub type: Coniferous (Stores water in its stem)

This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 45 years. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has many narrow, slanted stems covered in thick, smooth, black with white speckled bark, and the wood inside is dark brown.

In late spring it produces several giant, crimson flowers with 7 pointed petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a strong scent that smells like pepper.
