It takes 5 years for the lime green or blood red stems to mature, by which point they have often fused together into ropes with a diameter of 3 inches (8 cm) and are smooth and slick.

The circular, covered in fine hairs leaves reach up to 11 inches (28 cm) in length. They are solid green with azure zig-zags, and have rounded edges.
