Midnight Purple

Shrub type: Coniferous (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This average-sized shrub grows up to 2 feet (61.0 cm) tall and lives for around 35 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has many very thick, straight stems covered in delicate, rough, black with white speckled bark, and the wood inside is black.

The branches are short and slender that and are covered with large amounts of tiny, finger-like, leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are generally purple, frail and crispy.

In mid-summer it produces hundreds of small, amber blossoms with pleated petals. They are very delicate and have a weak scent that smells like mango.

In early winter tiny long, tapering fruits ripen. The clammy gold skin is delicate and sweet and bitter, and the crunchy lilac flesh is slightly salty and juicy. The bronze seed is small and sits at the end of the fruit.

It is suitable for making paper
