It has a sturdy, straight trunk covered in delicate, knobbly, pine-coloured bark, and inside, the light wood is black with white speckles.
The sparse amount of branches are very short and thick and are covered with small bunches of huge, long, tapering leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are brown on the sides and purple at the center.
In early spring, it produces several giant, magenta blossoms with kidney-shaped shaped petals. They detach easily and have the faintest scent that smells like rotten meat.
In late autumn it produces , V-shaped fruit. The rough light grey skin is delicate and edible when roasted; it is bitter and spicy, and the soft brown flesh is sweet and juicy. The green seed is large and sits at the top of the fruit.
The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.
Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with grassy ground between them.
It coexists peacefully with other plants.
It is suitable for making paper
