Bloodfruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This average-sized fruit tree grows up to 16 feet (4.9 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 61 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a narrow, crooked trunk covered in ridged, dark brown bark, and inside, the very hard wood is gray.

The branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with handfuls of tiny, thin leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are washed-out blue at the bottom and light grey with blood red streaks at the top.

In early spring, it produces clusters of giant, hazel blossoms with 2 pointed petals. They are very delicate and have a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like citrus.

In mid-autumn it produces tiny, triangular fruit. The smooth violet skin is thin and edible when cooked; it is sweet and spicy, and the soft copper flesh is bitter and sour and juicy. The faded green seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots grow as a near perfect mirror of the tree above, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It releases hallucinogenic smoke when burned.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
