It takes 4 months for the vibrant blue stems to mature, by which point they can have a diameter of 1 cm (0.4 inches) and are flat and wavy.
The fan-like, leathery leaves reach up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length. They are solid yellow or white, with vibrant blue splotches, and have jagged edges.
During late spring, the vine produces lots of average amber flowers, and during the early summer, after flowering, it produces a modest amount of large seed pods.
It absorbs an exceptionally large amount of water each day.
