Climbing Pineberry

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 3 feet (91.4 cm) tall and lives for around 58 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has many slender, curved stems covered in very thick, rough, pine-coloured bark, and the wood inside is white with black speckles.

The branches are tall, rigid and upright with dozens of twigs that and are covered with handfuls of tiny, pleated, leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are found in peach, magenta and blood red varieties, sturdy and fuzzy.

In late spring it produces copious amounts of medium-sized, indigo blossoms with kidney-shaped petals. They are sturdy and have a soft scent that smells like musk.

In mid-autumn finger-like fruits ripen. The sticky caramel skin is delicate and inedible, and the soft hazel flesh is sweet and dry. The grey seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.
