Waterstem Fruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This small fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 29 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a very thick, wavy trunk covered in silky, dark green bark, and inside, the soft wood is pale yellow.

The abundance of branches trail down to the ground and are covered with handfuls of miniature, spear shaped leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are solid white or blue, with magenta streaks.

In early spring, it produces dozens of small, dark brown blossoms with oblong shaped petals. They fall easily and have a delicate scent that smells like something putrid.

In early summer it produces very large, perforated fruit. The fuzzy amber skin is tough and savoury, and the very soft pink flesh is salty and sticky. The slate seeds are tiny and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
