Waterstem Tree

Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This small tree grows up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 132 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a knobbly, crooked trunk covered in thin, ridged, brown-green bark, and inside, the dense wood is pale yellow.

The small handful of branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with large amounts of soft, tiny, spear shaped leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are slate with cyan tips.

In early spring, it produces several small, ashy orange blossoms with spear shaped petals. They are sturdy and have the faintest scent that smells like apple.

In late summer it forms small, muted orange, winged seeds that spin and fall nearby.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between filled with undergrowth.

It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
It can flourish even in standing water.
