Bloodberry Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This small fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 32 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a knobbly, straight trunk covered in delicate, knobbly, gray bark, and inside, the dense wood is silver.

The small handful of branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with copious amounts of huge, fan-like leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either black, or purple with cream edges.

In early spring, it produces thousands of medium-sized, olive blossoms with long, tapering petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a weak scent that smells like rotten meat.

In late autumn it produces tiny, wide fruit. The sticky blood red skin is stretchy and inedible, and the slightly crunchy purple flesh is sweet and sticky. The caramel seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with grassy ground between them.

It is almost impossible to grow from cuttings.
