Clinging Mahogany

This small fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 26 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a slender, angular trunk covered in ridged, silver and white bark, and inside, the very dense wood is mahogany-coloured.

The sparse amount of branches are very long and thick and are covered with small bunches of giant, fan-like leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of green that gradient shifts to blood red at the top.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of small, white blossoms with needle-like petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a powerful scent that smells like bleach.

In early winter it produces small, stiff, pointed fruit. The rubbery light red skin is delicate and edible when cooked; it is sweet and sour, and the very soft dark blue flesh is sweet and powdery. The brown seeds are small and are bunched at the bottom of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with clear space between them.
