Spirefruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This average-sized fruit tree grows up to 16 feet (4.9 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 18 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a stocky, slanted trunk covered in fine, ridged, white with black speckled bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is copper-coloured.

The sparse patches of branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with large amounts of small, spear shaped leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are azure and hazel.

In early spring, it produces thick bunches of giant, brilliant purple blossoms with 4 spiral shaped petals. They fall easily and have an overpowering scent that smells like cinnamon.

In early summer it produces small, perforated fruit. The crispy cyan skin is peel-able and inedible, and the very soft sky blue flesh is spicy and very dry. The grey seeds are small and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with clear space between them.
