Coniapple Tree

Fruit Tree type: Coniferous (Stores water in its stem)

This small fruit tree grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 45 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 66 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a knobbly, crooked trunk covered in paper-thin, wrinkled, light brown bark, and inside, the flexible wood is light brown.

The small clumps of branches are very short and thick and are covered with large amounts of huge, pleated leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are green at the bottom and bronze with olive zig-zags at the top.

In early spring, it produces balls of giant, dull red blossoms with perforated petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are very delicate and have a delicate scent that smells like fresh linen.

In early autumn it produces , asymmetrical fruit. The soft lilac skin is delicate and inedible, and the crunchy grey flesh is savoury and powdery. The black seeds are large and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with grassy ground between them.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
