Lilac Waveflower

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This average-sized flower grows up to 9 inches (23 cm) tall. Its lilac stem is wispy and splits into several branching stems three quarters of the way up, and the small, yellow-green leaves are perforated with wavy edges. Many leaves grow along the entire length of the stem.

Around 20 medium-sized flowers grow in drooping bunches like grapes. The flowers are 20 cm (7.9 inches) wide, with alternating petals of aquamarine and lime, with a lime central disk. The flower head is shaped like a dish with 54 tightly layered, round-tipped petals. They detach easily.

It has a strong scent that smells like soap, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by a variety of insects.

It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
