Knobbleberry Tree
Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)This small fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 41 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.
It has a knobbly, straight trunk covered in very thick, knobbly, black bark, and inside, the hard wood is pale yellow.
The thick clumps of branches trail down across the ground and are covered with small amounts of huge, broad, flat leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are hazel with crimson tips.
In early spring, it produces lots of giant, silver blossoms with 5 kidney-shaped shaped petals. They detach easily and have no scent.
In early autumn it produces tiny, circular fruit. The crispy orange skin is peel-able and bitter and spicy, and the crunchy brown flesh is savoury and oily. The black seeds are tiny and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.
The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.
Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between filled with undergrowth.
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
