Cracklefruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 20 feet (6.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 41 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, straight trunk covered in paper-thin, cracked, brown-green speckled bark, and inside, the dense wood is pine-coloured.

The extensive patches of branches are very long and thin and are covered with copious amounts of huge, needle-like leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are lime and azure.

In early spring, it produces a thick sheet of large, grey blossoms with perforated petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have a delicate scent that smells like varnish.

In mid-summer it produces , donut-shaped fruit. The fuzzy muted yellow skin is stretchy and edible when roasted; it is slightly sour, and the crunchy bold orange flesh is spicy and syrupy. The silver seeds are tiny and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with grassy ground between them.

The seeds are toxic to people but not to certain animals.
