This burgundy moss is commonly found growing in small clumps In marshes, On trees, and On rotten logs.
It is small, growing up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. It forms in thin clumps and they are slow to spread and grow, and is extremely delicate.
When mature, emerald triangular capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late autumn to release dozens of spores.
