It takes 3 months for the gray-green stems to mature, by which point they each have a diameter of 1 cm (0.4 inches) and are rough and fibrous.
The 5 pointed, soft leaves reach up to 4 inches (10 cm) in length. They are solid purple with sky blue splotches, and have smooth edges.
A particular bird species likes to nest in it.
The sap is turquoise.
