This large flower grows up to 6.6 feet (2.0 meters) tall. Its gray stem is very thick and splits into 10 branching stems three quarters of the way up, and the large, emerald leaves are long, tapering with jagged edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

2 to 5 tiny flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 47 cm (18.5 inches) wide, with alternating petals of violet and amber, with a brown central disk. The flower head is made up of 5 petals in raised layers. They are very delicate.

It has a soft scent that smells like cotton, and it has a fair amount of pollen; it does not cause many allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also particularly attractive to bees.
