Spinebloom
Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This average-sized caudiciform grows up to 40 feet (12.2 meters) tall. The wispy stem is red, and is covered in thick bunches of flexible dark yellow spines. The thick, gnarled, orange trunk can grow to as much as 40 feet (12.2 meters) in diameter. Its purple branches are very short and thin.
The rounded-edged, very narrow and elongated leaves are found in purple, purple and crimson varieties. They are frail, and take some effort to detach.
It is steady-growing, taking 17 months to reach maturity. Once mature, a handful of flowers, with petals that are indigo on the edges and caramel at the center, grow at the top, reappearing once every 4 years. The flower head is largely flat with many tightly layered round-tipped petals. It has a mildly strong scent that smells like pine needles.
The caudiciform's skin is tough, the beige flesh is sticky, and the cyan sap is thin.
It commonly grows in large patches.
