Caramel Spine Caudex

Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This small caudiciform grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall. The very narrow, elongated stem is hazel and cream, and is covered in hundreds of flexible caramel spines. The stumpy, bronze trunk can grow to as much as 7 feet (2.1 meters) in diameter. Its black and deep red branches are very long and thin.

The wavy-edged, stiff, pointed leaves are bold purple and copper. They are delicate, but detach easily.

It is fast growing, taking 7 months to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, several flowers with petals that are generally brown; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour grow at the top, reappearing after 7 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is shaped like a sphere made up of 7 tightly layered, round-tipped petals. It has an intensely strong scent that smells like misty mornings.

The caudiciform's skin is tough, the bronze flesh is waxy, and the white sap is thin.

It makes excellent hedges.
