It has several thick, straight stems covered in smooth, black bark, and the wood inside is black with white speckles.
The branches are tall, rigid and upright with thousands of twigs that and are covered with handfuls of small, spear shaped, leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are hazel and gentle purple, delicate and leathery.
It produces copious amounts of medium-sized, bold green flowers with long, narrow petals. They detach easily and have a weak scent that smells like burning wood. In midwinter it forms smallpink berries.
All parts of the moss are edible.
