It takes 3 years for the orange-yellow stems to mature, by which point they sometimes have a diameter of 2 inches (5 cm) and are rough and fibrous.
The sickle shaped, smooth leaves reach up to 8 inches (20 cm) in length. They are found in lilac, caramel and turquoise varieties, and have toothed edges.
