Copperberry

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 13 feet (4.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 19 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, angular trunk covered in paper-thin, smooth, dark brown bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is yellow.

The small bunches of branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with sparse amounts of tiny, thick leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are copper with peach tips.

In early spring, it produces lots of medium-sized, blood red blossoms with needle-like petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They fall easily and have an overpowering scent that smells like grass cuttings.

In mid-summer it produces small, circular fruit. The fuzzy violet skin is thick and spicy and sour, and the crunchy lilac flesh is overwhelmingly bitter and dry. The bronze seed is large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.
